Fitness Around the Holidays: 10 Tips for Fitness and Nutrition

As the holiday season approaches, many of us find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of festive celebrations, delicious treats, and quality time with friends and family. While it's a time to indulge and enjoy, it can also present challenges for those who have been diligently working on their fitness and nutrition goals. However, with a little planning and mindfulness, you can navigate the holiday season without sacrificing your workouts, nutrition, or other things that are important to you. Below, we'll explore practical tips for managing exercise and nutrition during the holidays.

1. Set Realistic Expectations:

The holidays are a time for enjoyment, and it's essential to set realistic expectations for yourself. Understand that your routine may be disrupted, and that's okay. Instead of striving for perfection, focus on maintaining a balance between enjoying festive treats and making healthy choices.

2. Plan Your Workouts:

With a busier schedule, it's crucial to plan your workouts in advance. Consider shorter workouts that can be squeezed into your day. Questions you could ask yourself are would it be easier to complete workouts at home so you don’t need to factor in a commute to the gym. Or would making time to go to the gym would feel like a much needed break for you. The answer will be different for everyone but remember that consistency is key, even a 20-minute workout can make a significant difference.

3. Include Family or Friends:

Whether it's a family walk after dinner, a friendly game of touch football, or a group hike, involving your friends/family in your fitness routine can make it more enjoyable and help everyone stay active together.

4. Be Mindful of Portions:

Enjoying holiday treats is part of the fun, but it's important to be mindful of portion sizes. Fill your plate with a balance of protein, vegetables, and whole grains, and savor each bite. Eating mindfully can help you enjoy your favorite holiday dishes without overindulging.

5. Eat Regular Meals:

Skipping a meal or two because you know you’re going to a party might seem like a good idea, but it usually leads to us over eating later on because we’re very hungry. If you are someone that normally eats breakfast or lunch, try to keep that routine and choose foods that are not overly “heavy” or rich. Be sure to include a good source of protein, carbs, and veggies.

6. Stay Hydrated:

Amidst the festive beverages, don't forget to stay hydrated. Water is crucial for digestion, energy levels, and overall well-being. If you choose to enjoy alcoholic beverages, alternate with water to stay hydrated and reduce the overall calorie intake.

7. Prep Healthy Snacks:

While holiday treats are certainly meant to be enjoyed, having a few healthy snacks readily available can help make sure you’re getting important nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, and more. Prepare snack-sized portions of fruits, veggies, and nuts to keep you energized and satisfied between meals.

8. Take leftovers:

One reason why many people over indulge during the holidays is because they only eat those special foods 1-2 times per year. After all, who wants to miss out on their favorite dessert, meal, or side dish that they get to eat only once or twice a year. Brining a to-go container to take leftovers will allow for better portion control because you’ll know you can have more. Additionally, taking leftover can save you time during the week for food prep, and remember, most leftovers freeze really well! You don’t have to eat all your leftovers in one week.

9. Prioritize Self-Care:

The holiday season can be stressful, and stress can impact both your exercise routine and eating habits. Prioritize self-care by getting enough sleep, practicing relaxation techniques, and taking time for activities that bring you joy.

10. Have a Support System:

While the holidays can be a joyful time for many, it can also be stressful for some. Navigating friends/family that are unsupportive or don’t understand your fitness journey or routine can feel overwhelming. Having a supportive person (or persons) in your corner can go a long way. Wether that support is from a local gym buddy, friend, family member, or coach, remember that you have people that understand and are there to support you.

Managing exercise and nutrition during the holidays is about finding a balance that allows you to enjoy the festivities while still honoring your nutrition and fitness goals. By planning your workouts, making mindful food choices, and prioritizing self-care, you can navigate the holiday season feeling empowered and ready to embrace a new year with renewed focus on your well-being.

Cheers to a healthy and happy holiday season!
