My Running Essentials: Gear That Powers My Runs

At this point in my running journey, I have spent a lot of time running and have learned a lot along the way. While there is certainly not a “one size fits all” approach when it comes to running gear, there are a few essentials that I absolutely love and take with me on just about every run. Whether you’re new to running or experienced, below is a list of products that have played a crucial role on my running journey. I am not affiliated with any of the products or company below, these are simply products I would 100% recommend. So let’s get to it!

  1. Sneakers. Every runner needs to find what sneakers work for them. I have found that I personally do best with a sneaker that has a wider toe box. My favorite sneakers have been the Brooks Ghost in a wide fit. Some might find these sneakers to be a tad on the heavier side for racing, but I have not found the weight to be an issue for me.

  2. Hydration. My favorite water bottles are the Nathan Sports Soft Flask Water Bottles. They are small enough that they can fit into your pocket and they have a handheld carrying sleeve that is perfect for shorter runs. While these particular bottles are on the pricier side, there are other companies that make very similar styles. For longer runs, I love my Nathan Hydration Pack. I use a smaller pack that has been perfect for me, both for trail and road runs. Mine is a few years old but is most similar to this version here.

  3. Running Belts. My running belt is about as simple as it gets. I love have a secure zipper pocket that can hold my phone, keys, I.D., and a gel if needed. There are so many different variations of running belts but the one that I have used for years is called Gear Wear from Amazon. I love that its small, doesn’t feel too bulk or heavy, its CHEAP (especially when its on sale), and it has helped up well through years of running and washing.

  4. Electrolytes. For longer runs or days that its very hot/humid, I love adding a Watermelon Liquid IV to my water bottle. I sweat A LOT when I run, especially if its remotely warm outside, so the extra sodium and electrolytes are super helpful me. Keep in mind that these are bit on the saltier side, so some individuals may find these to be too strong for their needs. Post workout, I love a simple coconut water! Be sure to read the ingredients and try to find one that does not have sugar added. Trader Joe’s sells a great one!

  5. Running Watch. My favorite running watch is my Suunto Peak Pro. I have used it for a variety of workouts including trail runs, road runs, interval training, track workouts, strength training, boxing, swimming, and more! I especially love the navigation, altitude, and weather alert features for trail running. Keep in mind that if you’re looking for a “smart” watch for texting etc. this watch is probably not the best choice, but as a fitness watch it is great!

  6. Socks. For longer runs, I can’t recommend ankle socks enough. No one wants to be dealing with their sneakers rubbing on their ankles or getting blisters. My favorite long run style socks are from the enduro quarter socks from Balega. For shorter runs I will wear the no show socks, also from Balega.

  7. Hats. I always run in a baseball cap or a fitted cap if it’s cold outside. My favorite baseball style running cap is this one from Nike because it’s light weight and dries quickly. For a winter cap, this one from Under Armor has been my go-to. It’s especially helpful if you have long hair because it has an opening to pull your hair through. The exact hat I have is a few years old but its very similar to this one.

These are just a few of the running products that have earned a permanent place in my gear arsenal. Each item has been carefully chosen based on its performance, durability, and impact on my overall running experience. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or just starting out, investing in quality gear can make all the difference in achieving your running goals. So lace up your shoes, hit the pavement, and discover the products that will elevate your runs to the next level. Happy running!
